Steve Biko Odhiambo of Father Tilen Mixed Secondary School in Mbita sub-county has become the talk of the Nyanza region after developing his own radio station.
The journey of the form three student to own his radio station, started in March after a thorough research from physics books.
The radio transmission system is made of transistors, capacitors, amplifiers, cables, old radio sets, mobile phones and other old gadgets were donated by villagers.
The young man is passionate about radio, a dream he has had since childhood.
“I started my first radio station when I was in Class 4. The sound quality was poor because I was not using a multimeter despite projecting 200 milliwatts of power. I had to abandon it because the sound quality was poor.
“My current radio station has four stages with the first one being the moderation stage, then the pre-amplification stage, the third is the driver stage with the final one being the power amplification,” he explained.
He made the transmission system even though he had never visited any radio station where transmission takes place.
Towards the end of July, the local community allowed him to use a stalled water kiosk adjacent to Onundo Stadium for his studio for the FM radio.
Konzer FM, broadcasts in Dholuo and It is heard on 106.9 or 107.0 FM.
Furthermore, It has talk shows, musical and news programmes aired between 5.00 am to 10.00 pm every day.
Odhiambo’s efforts are appreciated by many people in the area.
Father Tilen Mixed secondary school Principal Martin Opere called on the government to support the boy.
“This boy’s potential has come at the right time when the government talks about innovation… The government needs to support this boy with the required resources as soon as possible to enable him proceed with more innovations”. Said Opere.
The Principal described the student as a genius in practical subjects such as Chemistry and Physics.
