15 Unapproved Universities and Colleges in Kenya
At least 15 universities and colleges in Kenya are running without legal approval, according to the Commission for University Education (CUE). These institutions are offering degrees and postgraduate diplomas without the necessary permission.
CUE has warned that any university or college not listed on their approved list is illegal. Degrees from these schools will not be recognised in Kenya.
Some of the unapproved schools include:
- Northwestern Christian University in Kakamega (which gave an honorary degree to MP Oscar Sudi)
- Africa Talent University in Kisumu
- The East African University
- Bradegate International University in Nyeri
- Baraton College in Kapsabet
- Kenya Anglican University in Embu
- Eldoret Bible College
- Logos University in Kakamega
- Harvest Land University
- World of Faith Bible College
In Kenya, only 35 public universities and 28 private universities are officially allowed to operate. There are also three special public universities: the National Defence University of Kenya, the Open University of Kenya, and the National Intelligence and Research University.
CUE has approved five public university colleges: Mama Ngina University College, Bomet University College, Turkana University College, Koitalel Samoei University College, and Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
This news follows concerns over universities awarding honorary degrees to politicians. Some institutions have been accused of operating without the proper accreditation.
